DMOZ FAQ

Does DMOZ only list the best site?
The mission of DMOZ is to create the most comprehensive directory on the net. Editors scour the web and list every site possible that falls within guidelines. As editors we are told that we must list sites even if we hate them, as long as all the criteria outlined in the Guidelines for listings has been met.

What do I do if a submission is refused?
Every category lists the editors at the bottom of the page. Send a polite email to them asking why the submission was refused. Remember that it is NOT an editors responsibility to answer emails. If they do, they are being polite. ;o)

If you did not get a response, and you still would like to talk to an editor, contact the editor in the above category, and so on until you get a response. If that fails...just post your question at the LadyX DMOZ Help Board and we will be happy to do what we can to help you out. :o)

I have a domain and it has 10 separate sites on it, links, bbw, teen, etc.. If I submit each site to the appropriate section, will I be penalized for having more than one site on a domain?
From reading several discussions on the topic in this, and other, SE forums - this kind of thing is called deep linking and is okay to do. Per comments from some of the editors, its okay as long as each site stands on its own and is worth adding to the category in question, based on its own merits.

If you get listed in DMOZ do you still need to submit to SE's directly or will they just pick you up from DMOZ eventually?
Any sites you have listed in DMOZ will be picked up by the Search Engines that use the DMOZ database automatically. You DO NOT want to submit to any of them If you have already submitted to DMOZ as all submissions go directly to DMOZ and it will look to the editor as if your spamming. Engines like AltaVista and MSN, do not use the Adult DMOZ database and these should be submitted separately.

Why did DMOZ change the name of my site in their directory to a name that is not on the site?
DMOZ editors are told to rename the site if they feel you are just using the name to try and get a high placement. I'm sure that's exactly what happened in this case.

I wrote the site with a clean index.html for DMOZ, and have the back buttons and links go to the spammed up index2.html for SE's and link lists. Once these pages are in dmoz can I then start writing doorways and subbing to the se's like the old days?
This is cheating. ODP (Open Directory Project, aka: DMOZ) listings are not at all permanent. Just be aware that if an editor re-reviews your site somewhere down the line it can easily be deleted without warning. Given that, the paramount importance is that the URL listed in the ODP doesn't have any of the extremely annoying features you mentioned.

Any other URLs you submit to be spidered by an SE won't have any effect on your ODP listing. You can in fact have all the grossly annoying entry pages for SEs you want on your site as long as the editor doesn't stumble across it when they review the site.

Can we use Full Page Ads?
One Full Page Ad is allowed per site. FPAs are not to be considered as the only reason to refuse a site. Editors can refuse it if the link to the pics is not easily found. Remember all DMOZ editors aren't webmasters, and a marginal site could be refused if it also contains an FPA.

What if the category I would like to submit to doesn't have an editor listed?
Not to worry, the editor in the 'parent' category can see all submissions in the category they are listed, and below. It will still be reviewed.

How do I become a DMOZ editor?
At the top of the category pages, there is a link to 'Become an Editor'. Make sure you are at the category you wish to edit when you click. If the category does not have this link, that means that no editors are being accepted in that particular category.

If you are new to editing, you will need to chose a category that is relatively small (20 sites or under) in order to be considered. This is due to the fact that larger cats require more work, and know how.

When you fill out the application, make sure you fill out the form COMPLETELY and ACCURATELY giving all required information. This shows that you can follow directions and gives you a better chance of being accepted.

If you plan on becoming an editor in order to promote your own sites, category guard, keyword stuff, or any other means of abusing your editorship....don't bother applying....you WILL be caught....if not right away...sooner or later.

I cannot lie though, it is TOUGH to become at editor at this point in time. However, don't give up....DMOZ can use as many GOOD editors as we can get. ;o)

Can my site be listed in more than one category?
No. All sites within the /Adult branch of the directory get one listing only. If you think your site might fit into more than one cat, choose the cat that you feel your site best fits.

How long does it take before my site will get listed?
This all depends on how active the editor is in that particular category. Some editors have the time to edit every day, while others can only give 1 day a week to editing. Generally speaking however, I would say it could take anywhere from 1 day, to a couple of months.

I am submitting an AVS site. I see that the sites listed at DMOZ have an AVS 'tag' beside the description, eg: [Adult Check]. When I submit my site should I add this tag to the description?
Sure! The AVS Tags are part and parcel of the AVS listings. If you add the tag to your description, you are ultimately making it easier for the editor to list your site. One less thing the editor has to do before listing it right? ;o)

Should I submit the content URL of my AVS site to the editor with my submission?
Sure. Anything that can help the editor get through reviewing your site will help get your site listed faster. Be aware though, that all AVS editors have passwords to all the major AVS Systems so it is not exactly 'necessary' to add the content url to your submission.....but it does help. ;o)

How long will my sites be listed?
All listings are considered permanent. Remember that the DMOZ Guidelines are constantly being updated...not drastically, but changing none the less. This means that sites that WERE within guidelines might get deleted, if, once the update is implemented, the site no longer fits the guidelines. Sites will also be deleted if they are changed in such as way as they no longer fit guidelines. So make sure that when you make changes to your site/s, you have the guidelines in mind.
